Key features that tell minerals apart
Color, luster, hardness, crystal habit, streak — the features geologists read first.

Identifying a mineral isn't about recognizing it the way you'd recognize a friend's face. It's about reading a short list of physical properties and letting them narrow the field until one name is left standing. Geologists run these in a rough order, and learning the order is half the skill.
Color comes last, not first
It feels natural to lead with color, but color is the least reliable clue there is. Quartz alone shows up clear, purple, pink, smoky, yellow, and milky — same mineral every time. Trace impurities and structural quirks shift color dramatically, so two specimens of one mineral can look nothing alike, while two different minerals can look identical. Note the color, but never trust it on its own.
Luster: how it handles light
Luster is how a surface reflects light, and it's far more dependable than color. The broad split is metallic versus non-metallic. Within non-metallic, you'll hear:
- Vitreous — glassy, like a broken bottle. Quartz is the classic.
- Pearly — a soft sheen, common on cleavage faces of micas.
- Greasy — looks faintly oiled.
- Resinous — like hardened tree sap.
- Earthy/dull — no shine, like dried clay.
Tilt the specimen under good light and name the luster. It splits the world of minerals in two before you've measured anything.
Hardness: what scratches what
Hardness is a mineral's resistance to being scratched, ranked on a 1-to-10 scale from talc to diamond. It's one of the most diagnostic properties because it's a fixed physical fact, not a surface impression. You can test it with everyday references — a fingernail, a copper coin, a steel blade, a piece of glass — by seeing what scratches what. A mineral that a knife can't scratch but glass can't either is in a very different bracket from one your fingernail digs into.
Crystal habit: the shape it grows into
Given room to grow, a mineral forms a characteristic shape, called its habit. Some terms worth knowing:
- Cubic — sharp cubes, like halite or pyrite.
- Prismatic — long columns, like many quartz crystals.
- Bladed — flat, knife-like crystals.
- Fibrous — hair- or thread-like.
- Botryoidal — rounded, grape-cluster bumps.
Habit is a strong fingerprint, though weathering and breakage can hide it. When you can see clean crystal form, use it.
Cleavage and fracture: how it breaks
When a mineral breaks, it either splits along flat planes (cleavage) or breaks on irregular surfaces (fracture). Mica peels into perfect sheets; quartz breaks in curved, shell-like (conchoidal) fractures. Count the cleavage directions and the angles between them — this is one of the most powerful and most overlooked clues.
Streak: the powder's true color
The streak is the color of a mineral's powder, found by dragging it across an unglazed porcelain tile. It cuts through the deception of surface color: pyrite looks gold but streaks greenish-black, and many dark minerals reveal a surprising powder color. For minerals harder than the tile, streak won't work, but when it does, it's often decisive.
Read them together
No single property identifies a mineral; the combination does. Glassy luster, hardness near 7, no cleavage, conchoidal fracture — that's quartz, regardless of color. Soft, three cleavage directions not at right angles, fizzes the way carbonates do — that points to calcite. Train yourself to read the whole short list, and look-alikes stop fooling you.
