The Mohs hardness scale, made simple

From talc to diamond — what hardness means and how to test it with everyday objects.

Of all the things you can learn about a mineral, hardness is the one that pays back fastest. It's a fixed physical property, it's easy to test, and it slices the candidate list in half almost every time. The tool for it is the Mohs scale.

What the scale actually measures

The Mohs scale ranks minerals from 1 to 10 by scratch resistance — specifically, which mineral can scratch which. A higher number scratches everything below it. The reference minerals are:

1. Talc 2. Gypsum 3. Calcite 4. Fluorite 5. Apatite 6. Orthoclase (feldspar) 7. Quartz 8. Topaz 9. Corundum 10. Diamond

A crucial catch: the scale is ordinal, not linear. The jump from 9 to 10 is far larger than the jump from 1 to 2 — diamond is many times harder than corundum, even though they're one step apart on paper. The numbers tell you order, not how much harder.

Why hardness is so reliable

Color lies and luster takes practice, but hardness is a stubborn physical fact rooted in the mineral's atomic bonds. A quartz crystal is hardness 7 whether it's clear, purple, or smoky. That's why a quick scratch test can rule out whole groups of look-alikes in seconds — if a specimen won't scratch glass, it isn't quartz, full stop.

Testing without a kit

You don't need a boxed set of reference minerals. Everyday objects have well-known approximate hardnesses:

  • Fingernail — about 2.5
  • Copper coin — about 3
  • Steel knife or nail — about 5.5
  • Window glass — about 5.5 to 6
  • Hardened steel file — about 6.5

Work from soft to hard. Can your fingernail scratch it? Under 2.5. Resists the nail but a copper coin marks it? Around 3. Survives a steel blade but glass doesn't scratch it? You're in the 6 range. A couple of tests usually pins the mineral to a narrow band.

How to test correctly

  • Scratch the specimen, not the reference. Drag the testing object across an inconspicuous spot of the rock, then wipe and look. A real scratch is a groove you can feel; a smear that wipes away is just transferred material, not a scratch.
  • Use a fresh, flat surface. Weathered or crumbly spots give false-soft readings.
  • Pick a hidden corner. Hardness tests leave marks, so never test a display face or a fine crystal.
  • Watch which one loses. If the glass scratches but the mineral doesn't, the mineral is harder than glass — and vice versa.

What the result buys you

Hardness alone rarely names a mineral, but it eliminates fast. Pair it with luster, cleavage, and crystal habit and the answer usually falls out. Soft, fizzes in acid, three cleavage directions — calcite. Hard as quartz, glassy, no cleavage — likely quartz. A scratch test takes ten seconds and removes more wrong answers than any other single check, which is exactly why it's the rockhound's first reflex in the field.
