Igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic: the three rock types

How a rock forms is written in its texture — learn to read the three families.

Every rock on Earth belongs to one of three families, sorted not by what it's made of but by how it formed. Once you learn to read formation from texture, a rock stops being a random lump and starts telling you its history. The three families are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Igneous: born from melt

Igneous rock cools and crystallizes from molten material. The single most useful clue is its texture of interlocking crystals — grains that grew into each other with no gaps, like a finished jigsaw with no straight edges. How fast the melt cooled controls the grain size:

  • Slow cooling, deep underground gives large, easily visible crystals — a coarse, salt-and-pepper look.
  • Fast cooling, at or near the surface gives fine grains too small to see, or even a glassy, grainless texture.

If you see tightly fitted crystals and no layering, you're almost certainly holding igneous rock. Some surface-formed igneous rock is full of frozen gas bubbles, another giveaway.

Sedimentary: built from pieces

Sedimentary rock forms when fragments — sand, mud, shell, mineral grains — settle, pile up, and cement together over time. Its signatures are very different from igneous:

  • Visible layers (strata) stacked like pages, recording successive deposits.
  • Individual grains you can often see or feel, sometimes rounded from tumbling in water.
  • Fossils, which form almost exclusively in this family.

Some sedimentary rock isn't made of fragments at all but precipitates from water or builds from organic material. As a class, though, the watchwords are layers and grains. Run a fingernail across the surface — if it sheds grit or feels granular, lean sedimentary.

Metamorphic: changed in place

Metamorphic rock starts as igneous or sedimentary rock that gets cooked and squeezed deep in the crust — enough heat and pressure to rearrange its minerals without fully melting it. The classic signs:

  • Banding — light and dark minerals separated into stripes by intense pressure.
  • Foliation — a sheen or grain where flat minerals have all rotated to align in one direction, giving the rock a layered, often shiny look that's different from sedimentary bedding.
  • Recrystallization — original grains regrown into a denser, sometimes sparkly mass.

If a rock looks like it's been squeezed — stretched, aligned, or striped — and catches light along a grain, think metamorphic.

Reading texture first

The trap beginners fall into is starting with color or hardness. Start with texture — how the grains fit together — because that's where formation is written:

  • Interlocking crystals, no layers → igneous
  • Visible layers or loose grains, maybe fossils → sedimentary
  • Banding or aligned, sheeny minerals → metamorphic

These three tests resolve the vast majority of rocks into the right family in seconds. From there, the specific properties — mineral content, grain size, hardness — narrow it to a name. But the family comes first, and texture is the key that unlocks it.
