A good rock photo does most of the identification work before any tool ever sees it. The difference between a confident match and a shrug usually isn't the rock — it's how you shot it. Here's how to take the photo that actually names the mineral.
Show a fresh surface
Weathering hides everything that matters. A rock that's been sitting in a field for years wears a dull rind of oxidation, lichen, and dust that masks its true color and luster. If the specimen has a broken edge, photograph that fresh break — it shows the mineral's real surface. Better yet, frame a clean crystal face if one is exposed. A polished or cut surface works too, since it reveals internal color and pattern that a rough exterior buries.
If the rock is dirty, dry-brush it first. Avoid wetting it unless you know the mineral is water-safe; some specimens cloud, dissolve, or stain when they get wet, and a wet surface also throws glare that swamps the camera.
Light it evenly
Flat, indirect light is your friend. Harsh midday sun or a phone flash blows out highlights and crushes the subtle differences between, say, a greasy luster and a glassy one. Shoot in open shade, near a window on an overcast day, or under a diffused lamp. You want the surface evenly lit so the camera reads texture and sheen honestly, with no hot spots.
Rotate the specimen slowly as you look through the viewfinder. Luster — how the surface reflects light — only reveals itself when light moves across it. Catch the angle where the surface looks most characteristic, then shoot.
Fill the frame and lock focus
Get close. A rock the size of a postage stamp in the center of a wide shot gives almost nothing to work with. Move in until the specimen fills most of the frame, then tap to lock focus on the surface detail. If your phone struggles to focus up close, back off slightly and let the lens settle, then crop later rather than shooting blurry.
Keep the camera steady. Crystal edges, grain boundaries, and fine banding are exactly the features that separate one mineral from a look-alike, and motion blur erases all of them.
Capture form and scale
One tight shot of the surface is the workhorse, but a second photo showing the whole specimen — its overall shape and how crystals are arranged — adds real signal. Crystal habit (blocky, bladed, fibrous, botryoidal) is a strong clue, and you can't read it from a macro crop alone.
Drop a familiar object beside the rock for scale: a coin, a pen cap, the edge of a fingernail. Size narrows the field fast — some minerals form tiny crusts, others grow into fist-sized crystals — and a guessed dimension is worse than a measured one.
