Clean and care for your mineral specimens

Some minerals love water, some dissolve in it — how to clean and store without ruining a specimen.

The fastest way to ruin a good specimen is to clean it the way you'd clean a dinner plate. Minerals vary wildly in how they handle water, light, and handling, and a method that's perfect for one will destroy another. The rule that keeps you safe: identify the mineral first, then choose the method.

Know what you're cleaning

Before any water or chemical touches a specimen, you need a rough idea of what it is and how hard it is. Hard, stable, insoluble minerals tolerate a lot. Soft, soluble, or fibrous ones tolerate almost nothing. When you genuinely don't know, default to the gentlest possible approach — dry dusting — and stop there.

The safe default: dry and gentle

For most specimens, and for anything you're unsure about, dry cleaning is the right call. A soft brush — a clean paint brush or a soft toothbrush — lifts dust from crevices without scratching or wetting anything. A puff of air clears loose grit. This alone keeps a collection looking sharp, and it can't hurt even the most delicate piece.

When water is fine — and when it isn't

Hard, stable minerals like quartz wash happily under cool water with a soft brush and patience. Warm (never hot) water and gentle work loosen stubborn dirt. But water is the enemy of several common minerals:

  • Soluble minerals — halite dissolves outright; gypsum softens and clouds.
  • Some sulfates and salts dissolve or recrystallize ugly.
  • Porous or banded specimens can trap water that seeps out staining later.
  • Anything glued or repaired may loosen if soaked.

If you can't confirm a mineral is water-safe, don't soak it. Damp-wipe at most, or stay dry.

Specimens that hate light and air

Water isn't the only hazard. Some minerals are light-sensitive and fade in sunlight — certain purples and reds dull permanently with prolonged exposure. Others react with air or humidity over time, dulling or crumbling. For these:

  • Store out of direct sunlight, ideally in a drawer or closed cabinet.
  • Keep humidity moderate and stable; avoid damp basements and hot attics.
  • A few unstable species need sealed or controlled storage, but most just need to be kept dry and dim.

Storing without damage

How you store matters as much as how you clean:

  • Don't let specimens touch. A hard crystal will scratch a softer neighbor every time they shift. Separate with foam, tissue, or individual boxes.
  • Cushion the fragile. Bladed, fibrous, and delicate crystals snap easily; give them padded, dedicated space.
  • Label as you go. A specimen with its locality and date noted is worth far more to you than an anonymous one — keep the label with the piece, not in your memory.
  • Handle by the base. Hold a crystal by its solid body, not its terminations or thin edges, where it's most likely to break.

Clean conservatively, store thoughtfully, and a specimen stays as good as the day you found it. When in doubt, do less — a dusty specimen can always be cleaned later, but a dissolved or faded one is gone for good.

Can I just wash any rock with water?
